L did you know…

You might not be so surprised to know that nowadays I’m watching anime. Not just any anime, so to speak, but one in particular that has a very intriguing story:

DEATH NOTE

The desire to see this show dates back to almost a year ago, when I got an edition of the Latin American Nintendo magazine, Club Nintendo, and I read the Japan section. I got to know that Death Note is about a guy named Light Yagami, a college student that finds a strange notebook. After taking it home, he reads in it a set of instructions that say that the person whose name is written in the notebook will die. Light dismissed said instructions as a joke, but he tests it on a kidnapper.

According to the rules, after 40 seconds of writing a name, the victim would die of a heart attack. Sure enough, the news say that the kidnapper has collapsed. Yagami is speechless, but in a few weeks (specifically, after 39 days) he has written the names of thousands of criminals. It is then that the true owner of the Death Note appears, a Death God (Jp: Shinigami) named Ryuk. When they meet, Light tells Ryuk of his plans to purge the world of evil and become God.

Of course, after 40 days of criminals dying from heart attacks, the United Nations send a team to investigate. Led by an intelligent and cunning yet hideous detective codenamed L, it’s not long before Light (who has been given the alias “Kira”, Japanese for “killer”) has the police behind him…

Man, I’d really like to tell the whole story right here, but that would make you NOT want to see the true series. All I will say now is that most of the story is based around the huge Kira vs. L rivalry. The interesting detail is that it’s up to you who is the good guy and who’s bad. You have the right to side with either the world-changing ideals of Light or with the swift justice of L.

If you want to see the anime now, I can lead you there… WARNING: Extremely addictive plot, 37 chapters, each divided into two parts for no reason at all. If you want to see it, you’ll be watching 74 YouTube videos. You’ve been warned.
