Memories

I've been trying to remember how things were about 14 years ago. The truth is, I can't remember what happened before August 2nd, 2000. Weird, huh?

For those who don't have the guts to read the 'THIS IS ME' in the column just to the left, August 2nd is my B-day. And maybe I got good presents but, screw it, I never got anything I ever had on a WISHLIST.

On with my story, It seems the change of millennium has interfered with my brain's memory capacity (perhaps it had something to do with the alignment of the Solar Sytem, LOL) but the first thing I remember that's ever happened in my life was this:

A B-day party at McDonalds, themed after Tigger's movie (you know, the one about Tigger's 'family') I was playing Super Smash Bros alongside my favorite cousin (we've all been there, gamers!!) and I sank my teeth into a green-&-white cake, killing a flat Tigger in the process. My big sister was sliding along the slide (DUH!) with my little sister. A squat Tigger stood in the middle of McDonalds's Kiddy Land, ready to be masacred by about 30 kids and a single stick. In words that a dope can understand: Tigger wuz da piƱata!!

Well, that's about all I remember. But if someone discovers Time Travel, I hope to be the first passenger aboard Doc Brown's train!

Mario

I've gotten used to the idea that if someone doesn't know the Mario Bros (Mario Mario and Luigi Mario?? confusing, but it's Mario Bros and Luigi Bros) it's because they're either banished from society or, alas, too stupid to handle a controller.

Huge Nintendo Game System Controller

Mario started out as a simple Italian-American plumber, cleaning the Brooklyn pipes (that's the story of his pipe-travel) when suddenly one of the pipes transfers him to a world where practically everything revolves around mushrooms and bricks. A flower makes you spit out fireballs and a star makes you blink in assorted colors as the background music changes to funky music.

Oh, and it makes you invincible for about 10 seconds.

Then there's the story: Mario needs to rescue a princess, but first he has to LOOK for her. Talk about shabby stories. She didn't even have a name!!

In the world he was in, nobody was a friend. Everything, from walking mushrooms to assorted-color turtles with gaping mouths, was bound to kill him by mere touch. And then there was this turtle with spikes on his shell and, surprisingly, fangs. He was later known as Bowser, the Koopa King, Bowser Koopa, the Big Boss, whatever you wanna call him...

It's just the same...

I wonder how the Toads (mushroom people) still don't think of Mario as a cannibal, what with eating mushrooms and stuff... I suppose they are decapitated Toads, because the similarities are endless.

Except for the color arrangement, this is creepy...

But anyways, Mario wasn't even Mario when he shot for the stars. He was known as Jumpman during Donkey Kong's games, but when he needed a name, Shigeru Miyamoto decided to christen him after one expectant Nintendo customer called Mario Segali.

I don't know where ideas of the suits in Super Mario Bros. 3 came from, but I know they were ridiculous (except for the tanooki one that turned into a statue, great for infiltrating Bowser's castles) but it was quickly dismissed upon the arrival of Super Mario World.

You're totally not going to impress the princess with THAT.

Super Mario World was the first SNES game featuring Mario. New items included a 1up Mushroom (handy for close calls) the now famous Cape that really enhanced the "Super Mario" title, and a name for our beloved princess: Peach Toadstool.

It also included a form of transport that became a beloved character in the franchise: the dinosaur, Yoshi. It became one of the most played games of that time, and there is even a GBA version of it available. Oh, and it was the first to provide a different anatomy for Luigi.

KEEP SEARCHING

Curse you, Nintendo...

To compensate for Yoshi's minor role (the Green Yoshi, not the other Yoshis that were kidnapped by Bowser's minions) Nintendo decided to launch a sequel to Super Mario World: Yoshi's Island. But the fact that Yoshi finds a baby Mario and tries to look for a safe place for him to live, makes this game a prequel to practically ALL the Mario games that exist and will exist.

Hope you know what you're doing, Nintendo...

This game introduced various moves that would later be symbolic to Yoshi, such as the egg laying and throwing, the mid-air jump where he kicks away in a desperate attempt to gain more altitude (this later transforms to not a desperate attempt, but a graceful rise that more than doubles his altitude) and a 'Ground Pound', where he stomps the ground with his butt.

Not to mention the occasional carelessness...

At that time, RPG's were becoming popular among the game companies like Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger. When SNES put in Mario inside an RPG, this is what resulted:

Or did somebody throw Mario and Zelda into a blender?

Legend of the Seven Stars was a hit, not as much a hit like Super Mario World, but a hit anyways. It included the integration of friendly versions of typical enemies like Goombas and Koopas, as well as some cameos of Nintendo characters like Kirby and Samus.

When a Mario game jumped to Nintendo 64, it became the first Mario game not to involve the symbolic items, but Super Mario 64 was designed more as an adventure and exploration title. It completely lost the classicness, but it paid off with one new power and another one that was enhanced: Invisible Mario was the new power that made Mario invisible (duh!) and let him pass through walls to complete levels. The enhanced one was the Stone Mario, which turned into Metal Mario.

Now you can go get her!!

On with the story, Mario received a lot of comments during this era, primarily critics concerning the lack of items as the mushroom and the star (although the funky jingle remained for the Caps) which, frankly, WAS a downside.

The huge disappointment in this game was the End, when you finally meet Yoshi, you can't even pat him on his snout. He just congratulates you, gives you 100 lives, and commits suicide by jumping from the castle roof.

And they made him stupid enough to ask if you have beaten the game yet.

Then the GameCube appeared. The promotion game was the first to have Luigi as the protagonist, and probably settled his personality as a coward. But, hey, he isn't to blame. After all, he DID rescue his brother from a haunted mansion, armed with a Ghostbusters backpack made by an apparently premature scientist.

Frankly, the title pic says it all...

Then Super Mario Sunshine appeared. It was a relief to see Mario actually roll up his sleeves because of the heat (at least for me, I don't know about you guys...) and a new character arose: Toadsworth, the counselor Toad. He advised the Princess on what to do, but in times of sudden action and mostly during Bowser's appearances, he has been known to faint.

Flimsy...

Mario landed another hit when he decided to try RPG one more time. This time, he dragged Luigi in with him, and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga became the best RPG game ever launched by Nintendo. It introduced live brother-&-brother action and moves only Mario and Luigi could ever perform (the Jump'n Stomp could not miss this opportunity)

Quickly followed by a DS sequel, Partners in Time.

And THAT was even more mutual moves!!!

Such success could not wait to settle down, for after launching the move-detecting console Wii, another concept of Mario's adventures hit the screens. Called Super Mario Galaxy, this game involved a little less area than its predecessors, but it paid off with a more extended gamma of ways to jump, say, FROM ONE PLANET TO ANOTHER.

Eat that!

And to spice it up, Mario has been not only a plumber and a meat-&-potatoes hero; he has been seen as a doctor, a safari tour guide, a cook, and, for goodness sakes, he has played practically every sport that comes through our minds.

But as for the games' plots, mark my words: it's the ONLY thing NONE of the games have ever changed. Yep, it's still the same "beat-bosses-kick-Bowser's-butt-and-rescue-Peach" routine Mario probably eats for breakfast already...

You were the one hanging around pipes in the 1st place...

NEW BOOK

I got to work my head out for it, but I finally wrote a full story depicting the world my 'Heroes of Old' (Tiberus, Cassady, Saffron, Aric, and possibly the Necrolord) live in. And I threw in the [complete] truth behind the Necrolord.

I still have to edit it, and then there's also another issue (which I prefer not to mention) but otherwise here's a preview of what I have so far:

Here's to us family:
  • I wrote it.
  • My dad edited it.
  • My mom half-read it.
  • And my sister insisted on posting it :P

Happy Birthday, Country!!!

Wow, it´s just interesting how people have survived in this 188-year-old section of land that is truly ours in any way. Nevertheless, we should always show respect for our land, no matter how small (112,492 km2) it is.

It´s quite great to add that in between those who show their utmost for the country´s highest, between those who train day and night to perfect their skills, between those who today posed and marched with pride at the sound of snare drums, glockenspiels, and hand cymbals... there was a guy on shorts...

Yep, that´s me...

I was part of a special squadron (cadets, if you will) and specially trained to march correctly and perform salutes with a nice-looking staff:
  1. Salute the People, where half of the squadron kneels to one side, and the other half kneels to the other side.
  2. Salute the Bride, where everybody [logically] kneels forward.
  3. Salute the Tribune, where everybody kneels to the left.

Salute the People

Overall, it was quite fantastic, but of course it had its downsides. For example, you can see two disadvantages in the picture that add up to one rock-bottom-downside:

WE WERE FREAKING DRY, FREAKING DRIPPING FROM SWEAT, AND FREAKING COOL!!!

1 week and counting...

Who would've known. Time is a misunderstood fashion, in the way that always, at some point, you want time to pass, but when you least want it to, it does. In other words, I'M A FREAKING WEEK FROM COMING BACK TO SCHOOL!!!

Oh, God, oh, God......

At least I can hope that this year's not as bugging as the last. Well, I passed these three months playing or writing, until I wrote a book, repeat, I FINISHED A WHOLE STORY!

Based on the characters from my other blog, Heroes Within.

My dad (Flickr Adal-Honduras) read it and liked it. He even thought of publishing it. Say, would you be happy if you made up a story with characters that are complete ripoffs??

NOT!

I am prepared. Two weeks ago, I got my stuff in and got pencils. I even found a nice case to put it all in. Not like these past 7 years where I had to use a blue J-World sports-bag.

It's still in great shape, but... it's 8 freaking years old...

All I can do now is wait. Wait. I can't wait for school, yet I don't want to go back. Human psychology is weird...

Treasure?

It had to happen someday. Yesterday I found a plastic cup (one of those cheap 25-unit package glasses that are so thin that you can light a match on it and there's a hole in less than a sec) full of crumpled, ripped-apart paper. Now, this wasn't your mini-trash basket. Nope, they were pieces of a map that I drew about a year ago.

The map came with info on its countries.

I have this cup right now, on my desk. I want to put it back together, but I realized this morning that some pieces of the map... were missing...

Ooooh, the Mystery cries!!!!!

Well, maybe when I get home I can look for the missing pieces of the map, but until then, I'll have to stay with a half-map and 1-1/2 page of info.

Say What?!

Well, what do you know... I missed this Monday's post. I can explain it, don't worry. What happened is that I went on a small trip to the capital for some medical issues and my sister's ID and college concerns. And for heaven's sakes, there's no Internet where I slept at... grandpa's house.

SAY WHAT?!

Well, yeah. What, do you really expect Internet to come out of a dusty house made ONLY for the sole purpose of refuge and coziness? Well, guess what? It does have Internet... the whole mess is that the only one with access to it is the one who installed it... my aunt.

SAY WHAT?!

Well, at least I'm back now, and no, we couldn't get my sister's ID card... good for me (maybe for her, too) but then... it was always going to be a mes, right?

SAY WHAT?!

One really good thing, my dad DID pay, as I said earlier. And it was no small amount: 1,000 Lempiras (cash $$) that came along with some birthday 200 (yeah, 08/02 is my b-day, so I'd be happy if someone would congratulate me on a comment box)

Nintendo 64 (for a PC)

Phew, after getting the hang of checking out pictures and discarding trash from my dad's Flickr group, I get to do some quick searching on roms for my N64 Emulator (ever heard of Project 64?)

Well, maybe not. Wow, what a stupid question...

So far, my favorite game is Super Smash Bros. mostly because of its dynamic and plot. If I ever get to lay my hands on a Wii console, I plan to get the new "Brawl" version.

Including the great footage and, of course, their adventure: The Subspace Emissary.

The Dark Knight (2008)

This is nuts. I keep watching the same movie over and over again. It seems that Batman - the Dark Knight has caught my attention. I have seen it so many times, that I even know almost all dialogues!

You wanna know how I got these scars??

I mean, the plot is so convincing and... just great! The actors, the setting, everything is in good conditions as to make probably the best motion picture I have ever seen in my life (so far)

I hope Chris Bale comes up with more...

Twitter Novice

Finally, I get the chance to organize a new Twitter account. My user ID is @guyonshorts due to the fact that when I made it (you guessed)  I was on a pair of baggy brown shorts. I only dedicate my time to posting invented quotes. Check it out!!

This is probably the shortest blog post I've ever wrote.

Wait a sec, I don't only post quotes, but also some ridiculously curious things about the world we live in, as it is with
People who park on driveways and drive on parkways...

Life...

Turns out, I had the same grade mentioned on the last post (38%) when I was in 5th Grade. I had failed Mathematics then. Goodness, can't I put a little effort on my favorite classes?!

People don't seem to believe so...

Well, today I traded games with a friend of mine. I had a hard time going through the first levels of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, but I managed to go through. It's a shame, though; I have to return it tomorrow, according to my pal's agreement.

This guy's decisions are as pointless as my pencil and my dad's jokes...

Recuperation test tomorrow. Woohoo, I feel so great... Boohoo!! I don't think I can! This is the hardest thing I have to go through, and there are yet more to come!! Why isn't life easy?

Life, the game, is actually quite difficult to catch...

Quakes

Man, this place reeks of quakes! Everywhere there has to be a small earthquake in or around this country. Reports have it that they have reached (in the Richter Scale) 5.1, 5.7, 5.3, 5.9...

Would somebody please calibrate those seismographs??!

I have to go for recuperation tests. I failed Civic Studies and Spanish. Yeah, yeah, I know, it's unbelievable (considering my national "heritage") and yet, here it is, a 38%.

At least, I'm better than my big sister, speaking of which...

She passed the recuperation tests from last week. I still have to go two more days before I recover my well-deserved grades.

Yeah, right. If I were ever to deserve those grades, then I wouldn't be here...

I am still worried about my country. What if those earthquakes break it apart? What would become of us? What will happen with our land? What goes better with chocolate fudge??

Well, I think you can answer the last...

Elders

Now that I'm rid of school and other concerns, I'll talk more into myself. Today, I want to talk about elders. Not that I want to offend anyone, but I've got a list of things I hate about my grandparents:

  • Their kisses are prickly and flappy.
  • They hug too hard.
  • Their "stench" is of liquor and humidity
  • They say "He's got his mother's eyes!"

As if we were made from spare parts...

But I actually have a good side on them. Although they call you silly, childish names like sweetheart and ush-gush, they have special rights, their liberties are almost unlimited and - ahh, how I would like to be old!!

Oh, God! Did I just SAY that?!!

B's, A's and a Great Sister

Great. Today I received good news from everybody. Turns out, I'm getting B's and A's here and there. It's like, "Darn, you're the best student I've ever had!"

Indeed...

What I can't believe is that I slept throughout the whole day. Well, of course, school can be quite rough around the edges, but I have never slept during midday.

Perhaps I should quit midnight snacks...

I talked to my big sister again (she lives in the capital), this time by webcam. Her grades are also improving. What can you say; high school isn't exactly paradise.

Hmm, I wonder what that reminds me of...

I love it when I have nothing else to write. Gives me more time to think what to write. This blog took me half an hour to finish.

Mostly because right now it's 11:19 PM!!!

It's a Crime Not to Enter A Title, But This Post Is Months Old And I Didn't Remember The Subject, So I Just Put In One Long Title Which Made It Worse.

You know, sometimes I feel really fallible, what with finals and stuff. This week is gonna be BIG!! Man, it's just like, "Hey, you ready for exams?" and just to think of it!!!...

Sometimes I just wanna get shot in the head...

Not much, huh? Well, notice the 2 CPU's...

This heap of junk popularly called personal computer is already turning out on me. I started jamming in all sorts of stuff from saved blog drafts to useless games and music (hey, I'm a blooming teen!) Well, anyways, I always get this feeling that, you know what I'm talking about, eh?

At the end it'll still be a heap of junk...

Today, my abilities in brickswork were quite outstanding (to make a long story short, I'm not quite the handyman) I handled the pickaxe as if it were a simple sledgehammer, one of those I used about 3 years ago.

People told me to imagine it was my enemy's head I was hitting...

All the same, I would like it if you'd just keep reading (nice work so far) for more interesting stuff later...

I know, I know, a lame ending, but an ending nevertheless...

A Letter to Myself

This is a letter that I sent to myself on September the 19th of 2008, when entering 7th grade. When I received my letter on May the 29th of the next year, I was a bit flawed when I read this:
Dear Adalberto:

How are you? Do you like your school? I hope so, because that's going to be your school for the rest of secondary. My advice? SURVIVE!! Try to endure 7th grade, and the rest will be piece'o cake! Try Physical Eds first. You'll have enough experience to win a soccer match, that's for sure. C'mon, you're in your best shape!!

Another class that would suit you is Literature, you know. You might also like English. All I wanna say is this: try at least for an Honor Roll Award or anything else worth the prize! You can do it!

Sincerely,

Adalberto

This letter made me contrast my expectations at the beginning of the school year and my results at the end.

To make a long story short, I didn't get Honor Roll. Well, not that I'm complaining...
