Folklore Day!!! a post on celebrating Honduran heritage

This is a short and simple yet entertaining and somewhat challenging dance that is common to the indigenous people of Honduras. Performance on this video by Mayatan Bilingual School's Freshmen, among which we can find the GuyOnShorts.

Second-to-last farmboy to the right, hint hint.

This dance is one of many shows in a day celebrating a beloved country's culture and traditions, the Folklore Day. On that day, more than 300 children got dressed in peasant costumes or elegantly embroidered native clothing, representing their ancestors and their daily life.

We built huts with our own hands and machetes, despite the infuriating inconvenience of having a water truck tear down half of our hut two days prior to the event. Still, Freshmen are Freshmen, and things are just difficult, not impossible. In fact, when we rebuilt the hut, I asked someone, —"Is this a punishment from heaven?"— he just said, —"No, it's just Jesus incarnate in the hut: it died and came back to life in 3 hours."—

Miracles happen indeed.

Our parents (well, most of them) cooked regional foods and treats, and we were in charge of preparing special shows such as local songs, dances, sayings, etc.

The event boils down to the election of the best indigenous costume for both boys and girls, a contest for which every participant gives their best explanation for each detail in their costume.

Regardless of who wins, the contestants always boast the most eye-catching costumes in the school. It's nice for me to point out that among the "India Bonita" contestants, you can find a very special sister.

Oh, and as a special treatment, these contestants get a special place in our next Independence Day Parade.
