Well, Castlevania, to be specific.
It's original name is 悪魔城ドラキュラ (Akumajou Doracyura, Japanese for Demon Castle Dracula, literally Dracula's Demonic Castle) It involves a long bloodline of "Vampire Hunters" whose last name is too good NOT to be a cigarette brand. They are intent on keeping the evil Dracula from taking over the world. The recent games, however, deal with the main character avoiding the resurrection of Dracula.
It all started in the Middle Ages, where heretics and alchemy were a part of everyday life. Leon Belmont and Mathias Cronqvist were the best heretic hunters of their time, Leon using his battle-hardened skills and Mathias using his wise tactics. However, they were too immersed in their job to pay attention to the evil uprising in the region.
After one of their crusades, Mathias finds his wife dead from an illness. He blames God and thereby curses him, allowing his own hate to take over him. We'll get to him later. Leon can't find his friend, but that is the least of his problems as he leans his own wife has been kidnapped. His desperate search takes him to an unknown wood where an old man tells him of the evil vampire that not only kidnapped Leon's wife, but had killed the alchemist's family.
The old alchemist aids Leon by presenting his latest invention, the Whip of Alchemy, a whip made as a holy weapon to smite evil. With this whip, Leon goes on to look for the vile vampire, whipping through hordes of zombies, floating Medusa heads, and skeletons. When he does find him, however, the whip deals no harm, as it is not sanctified enough. The vampire merely laughs at Leon, but our hero distracts the vampire enough to find and carry his wife to the alchemist.
Leon then realizes that his wife has been bitten by the vampire. In this dramatic turn of events, the girl tells him that the only way to nullify the process is to kill the vampire. The alchemist reveals that to consecrate the Whip of Alchemy, it has to kill a being with an unholy mark, meaning that Leon would have to kill his own wife. She accepts it as her destiny and is willing to do the sacrifice, eventually turning the Whip of Alchemy into the Vampire Killer, whose name already identified it as a pure weapon.
As Leon Belmont proceeds to attack the vampire and finally destroy its body, the soul is left floating in the air. Suddenly, it is sucked into a Crimson Stone by none other than Mathias Cronqvist, who reveals that all he needed was that one vampire soul to achieve immortality. He then bribes Leon into joining him in the Unholy Clan, supposedly to avenge God for suffering the same fate his friend had suffered. Leon, however, places a curse on both Mathias and on himself:
You have become a cursed being, and I will never forgive you. This whip and my kinsmen will destroy you someday. From this day on... The Belmont Clan will hunt the night! This marks the end of the origins of Mathias Cronqvist, who eventually became the man-hating Count Dracula. it also establishes the basis of almost every Castlevania game, where the protagonist is a cursed Belmont intent on seeking Dracula.
